Today’s Topic: CARBOHYDRATES. Let’s learn the quick and dirty about this nutrient, and why it’s not to be avoided!

What are carbohydrates?

Carbohydrates are, in science talk, compounds that contain sugar units. There are 3 types of carbs: Simple, Complex, and Fiber.

Why are carbohydrates important?

Put simply, carbs are the body’s MAIN energy source!

How should you incorporate carbohydrates?

  1. Aim to consume complex carbs (e.g. whole grains, legumes, veggies) more regularly, as they will fuel your body with energy for a long duration.
  2. Don’t forget fiber! It helps move food through, if you catch my drift. Typically, complex carbohydrates that come from whole foods (i.e. not processed/refined) will contain a sufficient amount of fiber.
  3. Limit consumption of simple carbohydrates (i.e. sugar) as these will give you a quick burst of energy followed by a CRASH. More on this later!
